Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi is
one of the widest hamlets in the commune of Massa
Lubrense. The name describes its position, between the
Gulf of Naples and Salerno.
The two Gulfes can be admired from the monastery of the
Benedictine Nuns situated on the hill called
"Il
Deserto" (the desert) which overlooks
Sorrento, and where the first inhabitants of this area,
a Greek colony, built a necropolis.
However the exact name of this hill is "Monte
Sireniano", because of the cult of the sirens, so called
by the ancient geographers, like Strabo,
and also as indicated on the maps.
Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi is loacted on the slopes of the
Lattari Mounts and very near to the Amalfi Coast.
It is 6 km far
from Massa
Lubrense, 7 from Sorrento, 11
from Positano,
17 from Vico
Equense, and 60 from Naples and Salerno.
From the small village it is possible to reach a small
beach called Marina di Crapolla,
situated in the area of Torca,
otherwise only reachable from the sea. Following a leggend
the Apostle Peter during
his long journey towards Rome.
To him the inhabitants dedicated a small church, built on
the rests of the temple of Apollo, where the fishermen venerated
the Apostle Peter.
Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi is opposite the isle of Capri and
the two smaller islands called Li
Galli, whose owner has been the Russian dancer Rudolf
Nurejev for many years untill his death. Nowadays S.Agata
sui due Golfi is a lively turistic resort, where people
meet from difernt parts of the world. From this village you
can esily reach by walking along signed paths Sorrento,
Massa Lubrense and the little bay of Crapolla.
