Piano, the ancient Roman Planities, is on a plateau
situated in the middle of Sorrento coast. It has a strategic
geographic position, between the Gulf
of Naples and the Gulf
of Salerno. In the inner part of the territory there is a beautiful
mountain, Monte Vico Alvano, 643 m, covered by rich vegetation.
Piano di Sorrento is like a natural terrace over the crystalline
sea of Sorrento coast and from Piano you can perfectly see
Mount Vesuvius.
In Piano di Sorrento beaches are hidden among indented and
tall rocks, that create beautiful creeks. Some creeks are big
and occupied by small villages, such as Marina
di Cassano.
Piano di Sorrento offers also interesting monuments, such
as the pontifical basilica dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel
and the monastery of Augustinian nuns (of XVIII century). There
are also other important churches, such as the monastery and
the church dedicated to Saints Joseph and Therese (in it there
is a reproduction of the Grotto of Lourdes); the church dedicated
to Our Lady of Graces; the XVII century chapel dedicated to
Saint Mary of Grace; the church dedicated to Our Lady of the
Assumption; and the chapel dedicated to Saint Andrew. There
are also interesting buildings, for example Palazzo Maresca
of XVIII century. |
