Meta
is one of the many villages of the Sorrento Coast whose
name derives from "miliarium", which means 'milestone'.
On Roman roads, the milestones indicated the distance (in
miles) from Rome.
An
important monument to visit is the pontifical basilica, Santa
Maria del Lauro, which has been built between the IX and
X centuries.
Meta is positioned on a tuff rock of the Sorrento coast
and extends towards the sea: tourists love the sandy beaches
hidden among the rocks and the crystalline sea.
The town
started to develop in the XVII century and many other interesting
buildings and churches were built.
